Botox and wrinkle smoothing treatments

As we age, the normal, continuous use of our facial muscles gradually wears away the collagen beneath the skin and causes lines, creases and wrinkles to appear. Botox and other similar skin smoothing branded treatments like Vistabel, Dysport and Xeomin help to relax these muscles, preventing the formation of such facial lines, creases and wrinkles. This type of treatment affects only the specific muscles injected. It leaves the surrounding muscles to function as usual and allows for normal facial expressions, albeit with less wrinkles.

Botox and similar branded injectable muscle relaxing treatments is favored by clients who wish to address such problems as unsightly frown lines between the eyes, crow’s feet,  forehead lines, wrinkles on the side of the nose and other telltale signs of growing old. It is also often resorted to in order to reduce lip lines, correct gummy smiles and nasal flaring and otherwise improve certain aesthetics of the facial structure.

Botox and related brands are the trade names for botulinum toxin, a purified form of protein and neurotoxin that can block overactive nerve impulses responsible for triggering excessive muscle contractions. However, the effect of the induced muscle relaxation is temporary and, depending on the individual patient and indication, can only last from approximately three to ten months. In any event, it is important to have a prior consultation with a medical professional before treatment to determine whether there is any contra-indication with Botox. For some cases, like when the client has a neurological condition or is hypersensitive to Botox, it may not be advisable to proceed.

The commercial use of Botox for cosmetic purposes has been widely-researched and is already approved in about 85 countries.  It is safe, effective, relatively painless and easy to apply. A typical treatment consists of a few quick injections of tiny amounts of Botox under the skin using very fine needles. For adults aged between 18 and 65, the procedure is carried out with a small needle that is inserted into the source of the lines, creases or wrinkles by a registered professional. The entire process can take only about 20 minutes to complete. No sedation or local anesthesia is needed. Following the treatment, there will be no visible sign other than a slight bruising or redness of the skin at and around the area injected. This is temporary and should disappear after a short while.

Normally, the results of the Botox treatment will become apparent within two to ten days following the procedure. The full effects of treatment should be quite noticeable in about two weeks. At this point, because of differences in muscle tone, some individuals may be found needing additional Botox injections in order to achieve the desired result. Based on averages, the effects of a single wrinkle smoothing injection treatment can last up to 4 months. By or near the end of this period, there will be a gradual return of the line, crease or wrinkle. Once this point is reached, another treatment cycle may be in order. Typically, clients prefer to have regular quarterly Botox treatments in order to maintain the desired facial appearance. Especially for those whose lifestyle, or livelihood, depends on looking youthful, Botox will need to be injected on a regular basis.

Perfect Smiles Begin Early!

The Smile Studios has a full range of dental services for children and adolescents. The goal of our paediatric dentistry practice is to prevent oral health complications from taking place, and to treat any budding problems as quickly as possible.

We understand that dental visits may be daunting for young children, and even teenagers are uneasy about the prospect. Because we are aware of the anxieties associated with dental treatment, we work to alleviate these fears with patience and empathy. The Smile Studios dental team has many years of experience when it comes to working with young people, and we make each visit as pleasurable as possible.

If you need a childrens dentist in Richmond, here is a list of treatments we regularly perform on young patients. Our Palmers Green and Hounslow dentist offices also see children regularly and can handle their dental needs in a positive, reassuring manner.

  • An in-depth examination of your child’s teeth, gums, and mouth for any signs of tooth decay or gum disease. Should any problems be observed, the dentist will present treatment options to you.
  • Tooth cleaning and fluoride application. We use special tools to comfortably clean between your child’s teeth and the area below the gum line. Regular professional cleaning reduces the risk of dental problems such as cavities and gum disease.
  • Sealant application. Dental sealants are made from plastic material and used to fill in crevices on the back teeth so that decay won’t set in. Your Hounslow dentist will advise you if sealants are necessary for your child.
  • Digital X-rays. We will take regular and panoramic digital X-rays of your child’s teeth and jaw to obtain a detailed overview and detect potential issues that are not immediately visible.
  • Children sometimes damage their teeth playing with their friends or participating in sports events. Tooth-coloured porcelain fillings can repair chipped or decayed teeth.
  • Crowns. When baby teeth fracture and require filling on multiple sections of the tooth’s surface, we sometimes recommend placing a crown over the tooth instead of a filling. Crowns are more durable and usually last until your child’s adult teeth come in.
  • Extractions. Extraction of primary teeth may be necessary if the tooth in question is too damaged to be restored, or crowding is present, or if the situation involves impacted wisdom teeth.
  • Conscious sedation. If your child needs help relaxing during their dental appointment, we have safe conscious sedation options that reduce anxiety and discomfort and helps increase cooperation, even during emergency dentist treatments in Hounslow, Richmond, or Palmers Green.
  • Dental emergencies. We are always available to provide dental care and support for paediatric dental emergencies. If you need an emergency dentist Hounslow call us and we’ll make every effort to see your child quickly.

We look forward to helping your child develop healthy standards of oral hygiene as well as positive attitudes toward their dental treatments. Our children’s dentist in Richmond and our other two office locations are here to make dental health an easy and stress-free goal.

Tooth Whitening Richmond

Why wait for a brighter, whiter smile? The Philips Zoom! Whitening System, available as a take-home kit or an in-chair treatment, will whiten your teeth faster than most other bleaching solutions.

There are many causes of tooth discolouration. The most common are the ageing process and regular consumption of coffee, tea, tobacco, and other stand-inducing substances. Certain antibiotics and medications can also result in tooth staining. The tooth whitening treatments available at the Smile Studios tackle and eliminate these stains, leaving you with a beautiful bright smile.

The Zoom! In-Office Whitening System is both comfortable and fast-acting. After placing dental dams over your gums to protect them, your dentist applies a specially formulated bleaching agent to your teeth. Then, using proprietary LED technology, your teeth will be brightened rapidly and painlessly.

Dental Implants Richmond

Dental implants continue to be one of our most popular restorative treatments. A permanent and highly aesthetic solution to restore damaged or missing teeth, they have the appearance, feel, and function of your own teeth. Many patients prefer them to alternative treatments such as bridges because the teeth neighbouring the gap don’t have to be altered to accommodate the implant.

Consisting of a small titanium cylinder, dental implants serve as a substitute root for the replacement tooth, which is custom-made from natural-looking materials. Titanium bonds naturally and easily with your jaw bone, ensuring that your new tooth is as strong as the one you lost. No one will ever be able to tell you lost any teeth, and the implant feels so natural that you’ll find it easy to forget too.

The Uses of Dental Implants treatment in Richmond

Dental implants are technically known as end osseous fixtures or implants. They are surgical components that interface with the jawbone and/or skull in order to support crowns, dentures, bridges, or other dental and facial prostheses. Dental implants also serve as an anchor in orthodontic dental implements.

Most of the dental implants Richmond practitioners place on the oral cavity needs to be connected to other dental components, such as abutments, so as to properly function.

A dental treatment in Richmond for surgically attaching an implant can, in the future, result in osseointegration, or the process of implants fusing with the bone. Dental implants Richmond materials like ceramics and titanium readily undergo osseointegration once they are in place. They do not cause foreign body reactions that are experienced with other materials. In addition, they are able to successfully support significant physical loads for many decades.

Other implants were in use prior to the invention of titanium implants and discovery of osseointegration. Such implants were the cause of many complications due to the natural reaction of the body to reject and expel foreign material.

The successful osseointegration of dental implants will depend on a healthy gingiva and jaw/skull bone. Sometimes, a dentist in Richmond will recommend a pre-prosthetic procedure in order to recreate an ideal gingiva and bone, which will consequently allow for an implant dental treatment in Richmond. A good dentist will be able to integrate a dental implant having the proper biomechanical loads with a success rate of ninety three to ninety eight percent. Such prosthesis can usually last for ten to fifteen years.

Dental Implants Richmond professionals use dental implants for crowns, bridges, and dentures. Implants are used to hold artificial teeth in place on the oral cavity as well as facial prosthetics. They are also useful as an anchor point for an orthodontic brace.

Replacement of individual teeth usually requires implant abutments attached to the tooth implant by abutment screws. Crowns can then be attached to the abutments using several means. They can be fused to the abutment, held in place by dental cement, or screwed.

Multiple dental prostheses sometimes also require implants, such as cases of removable dentures and fixed bridges. A bridge can usuallyconnect with several implants as well as teeth, using both to anchor it. Multiple prosthetic teeth typically outnumber their anchor points. Bridges that are supported by implants attach to an implant abutment in much the same manner as implant replacement of a single tooth. Fixed bridges may replace a minimum of two teeth, which is also called fixed partial dentures, and also extend and replace entire arches of teeth, also called fixed full dentures. Both instances are considered fixed prostheses because they are not removable except by a dentist in Richmond.

On the other hand, dentures that are supported by a removable implant are dental prostheses that are not fixed. One can disconnect them from their implant abutments through finger pressure. The abutment is made like a small button, bar, magnet, or ball connector that is connected to an adapter on the prosthesis’ underside having a complementary shape.

Implants on the facial bone can also be used to connect facial prostheses. In orthodontic practice, implants also assist the movement of teeth by creating an anchor point to generate such a force. This enables teeth to move under pressure.

Looking for gum disease treatments Richmond

Looking for gum disease treatments Richmond? Or even for bone grafting Richmond? No need to go far. Just nearby, Smile Studios has a certified NHS dentist in Heston as well as dentists Palmer Green.

Gum disease is a relatively common condition. It can affect anyone at any given point in time. At its early, mildest stage, it is called gingivitis. It is a non-serious gum disease characterised by red, swollen and tender gums that usually bleed when brushing the teeth. Often, gingivitis is also accompanied by chronic bad breath. Gingivitis comes about when plaque is allowed to build up sufficiently in the mouth. When this happens, the gums become irritated, then sore. Plaque, a sticky, colourless film of bacteria, food debris and saliva, can not only irritate the gums. It can cause tooth decay as well.

Gingivitis, if left untreated, can progress to become periodontitis, a more advance stage of the disease. Here pockets form between the teeth and within the inner layer of the gums. As these pockets grow progressively deeper, they allow accumulation of even more plaque. Eventually they destroy gum tissues and bone. They also loosen the teeth. Gum disease, if neglected, can also lead to complications like acute necrotising ulcerative gingivitis (ANUG), a condition marked by ulcerations between adjacent teeth. Unless treated, ANUG can completely destroy gum tissues. In rare cases, it can even lead to gangrene in the cheeks and lips. So for early gum disease treatments Richmond, why not have a checkup at Smile Studios’ NHS dentist in Heston or its dentists Palmer Green.

Plaque, the primary cause of gum disease, is relatively easy to remove. Good oral hygiene can prevent, even treat mild gingivitis. Brushing the teeth using fluoride toothpaste for at least two minutes at least twice a day, flossing the teeth and cleaning the tongue, visiting the dentist at least every year for checkups and getting regular professional dental cleaning will usually suffice to keep you free from gum disease. During a professional cleaning session, your dentist will routinely scrape of the plaque and tartar, which is plaque that has already hardened, from above and below each tooth’s gum line. In certain cases, if your dentist finds that you have too much accumulated tartar below the gum line, you may be asked to undergo scaling and planning procedures. This is done under local anesthesia and involves a deeper cleaning of the gums to completely remove bacteria from the roots of the teeth.

Periodontal disease at its advance stages may already necessitate surgical treatment. For instance, the Smile Studios’ NHS dentist in Heston or its dentists Palmer Green can provide surgical remedies that can help regenerate bone and tissue destroyed by bacteria. First, we make sure that the affected area is completely free of bacteria, then we make bone or soft tissue grafts and/or introduce tissue-stimulating proteins to help regenerate the damaged structures. We do soft tissue and bone grafting Richmond as well as cosmetic or restorative surgery to repair any disfigurement that may have been left behind by gum disease complications. We can provide flap surgery or pocket reduction surgery for those who have been afflicted by severe periodontitis. These procedures will not only improve the appearance of their smile by reducing the pockets or the space between tooth and gum, it will also decrease their risk of gum disease recurrence.

What does a dentist do in dental check-up?

A dental check-up is an important part of maintaining overall good health and personal hygiene. It allows your dentist to see if you have any dental problems and check your dental and oral health. This is important so that if you do have problems, the early they’re detected, the better, to prevent further complications and save you from more expensive, difficult treatments in the future.

Generally, it’s recommended to visit your dentist once every six months. The frequency and urgency to visit your dentist depends on the state of your oral and dental health. Patients who have problems with their teeth, gums, or mouth may need to visit their dentist as often as once every three months, while those who have perfectly healthy teeth and gums may only need to visit their dentist once a year. The rule of thumb is, the lower your risk for dental problems, the less frequently you need to see your dentist. If you experience any problem with your teeth in between check-ups, do not hesitate to contact your dentist right away.

Not all dentists work the same way, but in most cases, a dental hygienist works closely with the dentist during dental check-ups. At a dental check-up, the dentist usually does the following:

  • a full examination of your teeth, gums, and mouth
  • ask about your general health and whether you’ve had any problems with your teeth, gums, or mouth since your last visit
  • perform a dental prophylaxis or professional teeth cleaning and polishing, if needed
  • provide information, advice, and tips on diet, smoking, drinking, teeth-cleaning habits, oral hygiene, and factors relating to your oral and dental health
  • explain problems with your teeth and recommend the right treatment you need, if any
  • discuss the next date of your visit

To get the most out of your dental check-up, it’s important to communicate any concerns or questions you have with your dentist. Here are other helpful things you can do to facilitate a better dental check-up:

  • Let your dentist know of any changes you’ve noticed or felt with your teeth, gums, or mouth. Pain, sensitivity, or suspicious lumps need to be relayed to your dentist right away to determine what it is, what the cause is, and whether it poses any risk to your oral and dental health.
  • Update your dentist on any new health changes or problems you’ve experienced since your last visit. The same goes with any medication or supplement you’re currently taking. Your dentist needs to know your current state of health and kinds of medication you’re taking to avoid counter reactions and complications should you require dental treatment and medication.
  • Let your dentist know right away if you are suffering from dental anxiety or phobia. This would help the dentist be more conscious in working with you better by making you feel comfortable during the check-up. Fearing the dentist and dental check-ups or treatments in general, is experienced by a lot of people.
  • If you have questions or there’s something you don’t understand, ask your dentist for clarification.

How long do root canal treatments take?

Root canal treatment, also known as endodontic therapy, involves removing infected pulp or tissue from your tooth, cleaning the entire root canal system and disinfecting it, and finally, filling it and sealing it to prevent future infection and damage. This technique saves your tooth from being taken out. The entire procedure is carried out by a dentist usually within two or more appointments, depending on the severity of the damage and the condition of the infected area. Two or more appointments are common especially in cases where the entire root canal system is infected with bacteria. This involves dead pulp tissue, teeth with active infections, and retreatment cases. If the patient experiences pain, swelling, or tenderness during treatment, the dentist would take more care and precaution in continuing with the procedure, making it possible to require multiple appointments. The more complicated the case, the more time it will take to complete treatment. Examples of complicated cases include infected teeth with multiple root canals, or infected teeth with root canals that are difficult to find, access, or navigate through.

Prior to starting the procedure, your dentist may take x-rays of the affected tooth. This helps your dentist see a clearer image of the root canal and better assess the extent of the damage plus the work needed to save your tooth. Local anaesthetic is administered to the patient before a root canal procedure. This enables the patient not to feel pain or sensitivity during the entire procedure, allowing the dentist to carry out the procedure smoothly and with the patient at relatively relaxed and comfortable. The first appointment is focused on cleaning and shaping the root canal system of the infected tooth.

Your dentist will open your tooth through the crown, which is the flat part at the top of the tooth. They will then access the tooth pulp—the soft tissue at the centre of the tooth. All infected pulp will be removed. After that, your dentist will clean and disinfect the root canal and enlarge it so it can be easily filled. Your dentist will put a temporary filling in your opened tooth to keep it sealed and prevent infection until you go back for the next appointment. The last appointment is for final filling and sealing of the tooth. Appointments are usually scheduled a week after the other. This is done so that in case flare ups develop in between appointment periods, it would be more predictable and easier to manage by the dentist. It also gives your dentist the opportunity to monitor the progress of the healing process.

Over the last few years, newer equipment and techniques have been developed that contribute to the efficiency of root canal treatment. As an estimate, a single root canal procedure lasts between 30-60minutes, and in more complicated cases, as long as 90 minutes. If you have trouble sitting or lying still for extended periods of time, have jaw-joint problems (TMJ), or prefer a series of shorter appointments, let your dentist know before starting with the first appointment. The length of each appointment does not affect efficiency of treatment.

How long does the anaesthetic last after a dental injection?

Local anaesthetic is a medication used to numb you from feeling any kind of sensitivity and pain during and until a few hours after root canal procedure. It doesn’t make you lose consciousness, but it effectively relieves you from pain. You may only feel slight pressure or movement. Local anaesthetic works by blocking the nerves from the affected parts of the body so that pain signals would not reach your brain.

Local anaesthetic is injected or applied on the area the dentist needs to work on—the gums, the inside of the cheek, affected tooth, etc. Upon administration of local anaesthetic, it will only take a few minutes for you to lose sensation in the area where it is injected or applied. Your dentist will make sure that the area is completely numb before starting the procedure. With most local anaesthetics, your tooth will be numb for 2-3 hours, while your lips and tongue will be numb for 3-5 hours after the time of injection. As the blood flow carries away the anaesthetic from the injection site to be metabolized or broken down, the numb feeling will gradually fade away. During this time, it is important not to sustain any damage on the numb area. One of the reasons why you are told to rest and take it easy after any procedure administered with an anaesthetic is because being active or engaging in any form of strenuous physical activity makes the anaesthetic effects fade more quickly. Your dentist may prescribe you painkillers especially if it’s likely you’ll feel a lot of pain after the anaesthetic wears off.

Lidocaine is a common local anaesthetic used in dental procedures. There are many others, most of them ending in –caine. Many of these drugs are less likely to cause allergic reactions. Local anaesthetic includes not just the numbing part of the liquid being injected or applied to you, but may also include the following:

  • Epinephrine (adrenaline) – This is added to the anaesthesia solution to increase its numbing effect
  • Vasoconstrictor – This narrows your blood vessels and makes the numbness last longer
  • Sodium chloride – This allows the drugs to be absorbed into your blood
  • Sodium hydroxide – This makes the numbing drug work

Local anaesthesia with epinephrine is commonly used. Its numbing effect lasts for 2-4 hours, and in some cases, until after a few days. It is important to note that patients who have heart disease, high blood pressure, or have allergic reactions to epinephrine inform their condition to their dentist before root canal procedure. They will be administered with a local anaesthetic without epinephrine. The numbing effect of local anaesthetics without epinephrine usually last an hour or less than two hours after administration.

Shortly after being administered with local anaesthetic, you may experience side effects, but in most cases, these are minor and temporary and do not cause long-lasting problems. Side effects include:

  • a numb tongue, tooth, or mouth
  • drowsiness
  • dizziness
  • blurred vision
  • twitching muscles
